Off-road bikes that are not allowed to be ridden on the road have been banned from being filled up by a petrol station in Hartlepool, Durham.

Hartlepool Service Station in Rossmere has introduced the ban following a series of incidents of illegal off-road bikes “tearing through our parks and streets, flying past schools, and putting everyone at risk”, according to a local councillor.

Cllr Quewone Bailey-Fleet said off-road bikes that are not registered for use on public highways have become “a real threat” in the area, with the forecourt’s manager and team showing “what local leadership looks like by putting the safety of residents first and standing with our community against antisocial behaviour”.

Bailey-Fleet added “Hartlepool will not tolerate lawlessness”, expressing the hope that other local businesses will follow the lead set by the garage, as “we all have a role to play in protecting our town”. Hartlepool Police are said to be proactive in taking action against those riding the bikes.
